Abiding in the Self

Note: Every week from 1995, Guruji started sending out knowledge sheets which he fondly called the 'Knowledge Fax' to be read out and discussed at Satsangs happening all around the world. Guruji ended this delightful practice at the 365th week in September 2002, so as to let us fully digest them! These knowledge sheets have been compiled into An Intimate Note To The Sincere Seeker Volumes 1-7. I began the practice of posting a Knowledge Sheet every week for the benefit of those who have not had the opportunity to get hold of these priceless books. It had never cease to uplift me by reading and rereading this knowledge. So I know you would certainly enjoy them!

Abiding in the self, you become the Valentine for the whole world. Spirit is the Valentine of matter and matter is the valentine of the spirit. They are made for each other. They uphold each other. If you hold onto matter and do not respect the spirit, then matter is not pleased. If you honor the spirit, then you will care for the world, and when you care for the world, it will take care of you.

I am the valentine of the whole world and I reside in every heart. If you are my valentine you will see me everywhere.

Have the same love for everyone, with different flavors. You cannot behave the same way with everyone, but you can love all of them. Love transcends behaviour and etiquette.

Which way down the road?

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
                                                                                          -Robert Frost

It is romantic to think that we are very brave because when we come to cross roads in life, we like to think that we take the road that is more challenging, more interesting. One road is filled with lots of obtacles, unprecedented, and obviously an uphill climb while the other is, well, maybe not easy peasy, but somehow, more people has trodden there and there is already a guideline for us to follow. On the second road, just follow the instructions!

If you are someone who has already taken on the challenging road, you will be in for many surprises along the way, of course, you will be shot at, ridiculed, laughed at, and injured physically and emotionally. But somehow, it will bring us nearer to our hearts, and we live life to the fullest and become more confident with every step we take.

Whoever says it is easy? We have to put on a brave face and overcome our fear to make mistakes.

Making the same mistakes again and again is a fool. The intelligent and the wise make new mistakes!

Source: http://curlyqmosaics.blogspot.com/2011/01/always-make-new-mistakes.html

So too in our daily practice of Yoga and Pranayamas. We kept putting our own comfort first and our practice second, making excuses that we have no time, more important things to do at hand, and plain laziness. Slowly, day by day, we forget about ourselves and stop listening to what we really need.

If you are a layperson like me (Yoga masters and Gurus not included), I am sure this this the most challenging practice to take on. Feel guilty of not doing your practice? Couldn't care less that you are not doing your practice? Feel like doing any other thing other than doing your practice? You are not alone.

Introducing Rick Evertsz, my guitar guru during my Taiwan Sri Sri Yoga Teacher Training Course, who has taken up this challenge of doing his practice consistently everyday without fail for 1001days. I guess after this, he just can't do without asanas anymore! He has shared with me his amazing improvement in health and flexibility, and to think that he was still so stiff during the Training course in May 2010. This tall bald guy has been quite an encouragement to me in my practices and asanas, and has influenced me to be encouraging and supportive to everyone around me as well!

Just don't beat yourselves up for not doing your practice.  As Guruji says 'Just relax and be your natural self'!

Question: God is all-abundant, totally full, and we are all connected to God. Then why are we in debt, except for some? Why do they have, and we don't have?

Sri Sri: Is it only money you lack? When you say you are indebted, that means you have received something! Otherwise how can you be indebted? Those who have received should feel indebted. Be thankful for having received. The more abundance you have, the more indebted you will feel. And when you feel indebted and grateful, more abundance comes to you.

Feel indebted. Feel grateful.
Then abundance grows.

Abundance and indebtedness coexist.

Someone in the group: An abundance of indebtedness!

Sri Sri: You think you are indebted, but you really are not.
Yet it is better to feel totally indebted, because every bit of what you have doesn't belong to you anyway, including your own body. When you are infinitely indebted for your body, for Knowledge, for things you have received, and for your own life, then you bask in the abundance of the Creator.

Someone in the group: I feel very indebted. Thank you!

Changing directions (2) (Seriously, ZY, you are a lost soul...;)

When I started this blog, it was supposed to be a beginning of something BIG. I aimed to report every single activity of the Alor Setar Art of Living centre, be it an event as mundane as the weekly cleaning of the centre, and heck, even about the colony of ants that have settled themselves comfortably at the centre where they rightfully claimed as their home! (no expulsion order as yet)

I was sure I was able to write about something witty every other day, trying carefully not to let it turn into some wasted space where I rant about Guruji or any spiritual or emotional experience for that matter.

Of course, my inner critic tells me that I am doing a lousy job, which led to several occasions where I found myself looking at the 'DELETE' button on the webpage. The only thing that kept me from pressing the button is that I don't feel that this is MY blog in particular, but OUR blog. (God help me!)

Then comes the application called Facebook, which is seriously a better and a more interactive space to interact and to share the numerous photos of our activities and latest updates. (Yeah the Art of Living Alor Setar, find us on Facebook and Twitter)

I stopped making an effort.

Thanks to some encouraging kind souls, I continued posting for some time. Now, after I got married and got kicked out of Alor Setar...erm, no after I got kicked out of Alor Setar I got married, ...uh...whatever. Now, left with no participation in the Alor Setar centre programmes, what is to happen here?

Yet, this space is special to me. In Sanskrit terms, this maya has a magnetic pull on me, urging me to write, to create, and to think less of myself and to just churn something out when I feel like it.

So once again, we are on to switch gears. This time round, I will add an element of surprise as I lose control and make great use of the creativity in me after having meditated for some time on the area 2 inches behind my sexual organs (for those of you ignorant out there, it is an energy centre for creativity). I would post each article as if it is the best article in the world.

I hereby announce that I am losing my mind!

ZY

There is a place you can come where everything is beautiful.

Tourists travel from place to place looking for beauty. With photos and souvenirs they try to take the beauty back home with them. They only get tired and tanned.

Yet the most beautiful spot anywhere is right here. When you come here, you find that everything is so beautiful wherever you are.

Where is this place?
Don't look here and there; come within you.
When you are here, then any place becomes beautiful.
Then wherever you go, you add beauty there.

If you are unhappy, even the moon irritates you, sweet things nauseate, music disturbs. When you are calm and centered inside, noise is musical, clouds are magical, rain is liquid love.

Book yourself on a trip to this most beautiful place in the universe. Then you'll find that everyday is a vacation and a celebration.

My Favourite Balvinder Story

Once upon a time, some devotees built an Ashram in a faraway land and requested their Guru to send one teacher from His Ashram to take charge of their ashram over there.  The distance between the two Ashrams are very far and it would take days of walking to arrive at the Ashram (Walking and meditation was the only mode of transportation back then ;)

The Guru promised the Devotees that he would send a teacher to their Ashram. The Guru sent 10 disciples for this mission. Everyone in the Ashram was shocked. 'How come our Guru sent 10 disciples when the people from the Ashram only asked for one?' they thought, unable to understand their Guru's actions.

However, nobody argued and the 10 disciples begin their journey to the faraway Ashram.

After a few days, they arrived at a city. There they met a rich Businessman. The Businessman said ,'I run a big business and I own an empire. But alas! I have no son! I would like to look for a son-in-law to take over this empire of mine!'

'Oh, but our Guru gave us a mission. We could not help you,' the disciples replied.

'Ah,' said the rich Businessman. 'But imagine the riches and the life you will lead if you are willing to help me. Furthermore, if one of you stayed back, you still have 9 of you to go!' and the Businessman introduced his beautiful daughter to them.

One of the disciples were captivated by the beauty of the businessman's daughter. So he decided to marry her and stayed back to assist the businessman to run his business, while the other 9 disciples continued on their journey.

After a few days, they came to another kingdom. They were met by the King himself, as the King is a very religious person and respect the Guru's followers very much.  After the feast, the King said to the disciples,'My Head Priest had passed away recently and I can't find any other suitable candidate to fill his position. It would be a great opportunity if one of you could stay to fill this position.'

'But we are on our way to the Ashram!' they replied.

'Ah! But you see,' replied the king,'There are many benefits in becoming the Head Priest. You would be the most respected person in the Kingdom after me. You would be the second most powerful man in this Kingdom. You would have all the funds you need for your religious endeavours!'

One of the disciples were tempted by the King's offer. 'Anyway, there are still the other disciples who can go to the Ashram,' he thought. So he stayed back to become the Head Priest to assist the King and the rest of the disciples continued on their journey.

One day, they came to a village slum.  The villagers were divided into 2 opposition parties which were always fighting. 'Please help us restore peace in this village!' the villagers pleaded with the disciples.  So they organised yoga and breathing courses and transformed the village from a slum to a peaceful state. When they were prepared to leave, the villagers pleaded to the disciples,

"Please stay with us to maintain the peace that you have brought to this village! What could we do without you? We might go back to the old days and continue to fight and live in a state of unrest."

So after discussing among themselves, 2 of the disciples decided to stay back in the village and continue with organising the village projects.

The rest of the 6 disciples continue with their journey.

 *  *  *  *  *
So it happened that along the way, the other 4 disciples also left the group due to various reasons.

Now only 2 disciples were left to continue with the journey.

One day, they passed by a place where an organiser came to welcome them anxiously.  "I am in a difficult position. I was organising a mega Yoga course and suddenly the teacher did not come. Can you help me?"

So the last 2 disciples stayed back for a few days to help teach the Yoga course. After the course, the organiser and the teachers were discussing about the course and one of the teacher got into an argument about the Guru's knowledge. So the teacher told the other disciple," You go ahead to the Ashram, I need to stay back to discuss about this point of knowledge before I could continue the journey. I cannot bear to see the Guru's knowledge being twisted and misunderstood!"

The last disciple continued the journey alone and finally reached the Ashram.  Everyone was amazed that the Guru sent 10 disciples but alas, only one reached the destination!

(I try to retell my favourite story of Balvinderji as accurate as possible, but details might differ)

I first heard this story 2 years ago at the Bengalore Ashram as told by Balvinderji. I heard this story again when I was blessed enough to meet him again 2 months ago. The moral of the story is that the journey towards enlightenment is full of obstacles. Those obstacles include our desires and attachment towards riches, power, career, relationships, setting other people right and so on and so forth. At first I was very skeptical and misunderstood the moral of this story. But 2 years down the road, this story became one of my pillars of strength when I was feeling very lonely walking on this path; when I was filled with self doubt, remorse and regret; and especially when I lost every ounce of belongingness with the organisation that I have grown so attached to. Listening to Balvinderji the second time round helped me regain my confidence on this path, to accept the changes around me gracefully, and to look ahead courageously. If you ever felt so much pain, know that you have been given more ability to love.

Sangh Gachadhwam and happy journey!

What type of time do you give the divine?

Usually you give the time that is leftover, when you have nothing else to do, when no guests are coming, there are no parties to go to, no nice movies to watch, no weddings to attend. Such time you give. Yet this is not quality time.

Give quality time to the Divine. You will be rewarded. If your prayers are not answered, it is because you have never given quality time. Give Satsang and meditation your highest priority.

Give prime time to the Divine.
You will be rewarded.

Today is the day...

Today is the day the waves go crazy,
even the Gods become lazy,
instead of doing Kriya, they go to a party;
Happy Birthday, my beloved Hwa Sengji,
"Lots of love and blessings!" chimes in Sri Sri,
And here's to wishing you a safe journey,
Coming back from the other side of the sea!

ZY, struck with inspiration on 7/10/2011

The party will be held on 15th October 2011 Saturday at the riverside. For more information please come for Group Practice this coming Sunday or Monday!

A student's job is to satisfy the Master. But how can you satisfy someone who is already satisfied?

If Guru is satisfied, your growth is stunted.

If Guru is unsatisfied, he is away from the Self.

If Guru is satisfied, what an inspire you to grow?

Is he is unsatisfied, he cannot be a Guru.

If he is satisfied, he cannot be a Guru.

So what is the answer?

All sensory pleasures in the world are like wrapping paper; the true bliss is the Presence inside.

Divine love is the present, yet we hold on to the paper and believe we have already enjoyed the gift. It's like putting a chocolate in your mouth with the foil wrapping still on. A little chocolate may seep through, but the foil makes sores in the mouth.

Unwrap the present. The whole world is there for you to enjoy. The wise know how to enjoy the gift inside, while the ignorant get stuck to the paper.

Bonus read:

Wally told Guruji: I have some property for you to consider as an ashram in the US.

Sri Sri: I want every home to be an ashram.  How many of you consider your home to be an ashram? If not, what keeps your home from being an ashram? What are the impediments? What do you think are the qualities of an ashram?

New Year's was a grand celebration . . . like everyday!
And everyone was unusually crazy . . . like everyday!
Guruji was fantastically charming . . . like everyday!
And a basket full of chocolates was on the couch . . . like everyday!
They were in shape of bees today.
And they started flying from the Guru's hand.

JUST BE

Joy is dissolving . . . losing your identity.
Rest is dissolving . . . losing your identity.
Love is dissolving . . . losing your identity.
The message for 1996 is . . . JUST BE!
Relax and just be.

That doesn't mean be lazy . . . No!
Be very busy . . . and just be.

The events come and go, they perish like flowers.
But every event and every person contains some honey.
Like a bee, just take the honey out of every event and every moment and move on.
Be like a busy bee and be in the Being.

Question: What is the nectar of life?
Answer: The Infinity . . . The Divinity.

(Just Be)

ZY's sixth Advance Course sharing-only for those who dare...

...read on

Introducing Balvinder Chandiok, my most favourite advance course teacher, who guided me, from being sadly confused, to staying happily confused.
This inspirational quote is stolen from Balvinder Chandiok's blog
Before I even met him, Balvinder already knew my problem. I am definitely not alone. Who cares if nobody understands me? The problem is, I don't know what's my problem!

We live in the best times, and we grow up KNOWING that we are smart; we believe in our own self; we KNOW that if we could master our own mind; we could concur the whole world; we KNOW what is good  for us and what is not...now, that is our main and biggest problem! We KNOW too much! OK, maybe it is just me: I KNOW too much!

My brain is literally swimming with all these virtues such as accepting people as they are, letting go of the past and living in the present moment, don't see intention behind other's mistakes, opposite values are complementary... I already KNOW this, any idiot who dare come and repeat these words to me will be in deep trouble!  It came to a point that  I felt so overwhelmed by all these knowledge points that I just felt like throwing up and forgetting about all these superficial words. But how?

I don't know! I'm stuck.

So, I signed up for an advance course.

Finally, I found someone that explains course points in such a subtle way that my heart literally blossom with just a few simple words, and of course, followed by a few blank out sessions (meditation, what else?) And thank god he has so much depth in him that he explains course points in his own cool and humorous way, instead of repeating after Guruji (what a breath of fresh air!)

Contentment
Most people would gush to me, you are so lucky, you have a flexible job (no stress at all), you have the time and money to do what you want... (They fall short of literally shouting at my face: BE CONTENT!) Yeah,  yeah, you think I don't KNOW that?

Now here's what I learn about contentment from Balvinder:
Contentment is looking at your own wife instead of your neighbour's wife.
(If you are not already laughing, you must go to his advance course and listen to him speak in person. He got me rolling with this one!)

Accepting people as they are
He says,'The key to accept people as they are, is to accept yourself!'
Oh my God! Such depth!
(If you haven't accept people as they are as yet, sign up for his advance course and listen to him speak in person.)

At the end of his course I felt 'Yes!This is just the beginning'  instead of the usual 'Enough! This is the end of it!' feeling from all my previous advance courses. (Though you might notice that my ego will prevent me from admitting that) Of course, just like no fingerprint is the same, there is no same experience in our spiritual journey. You must have noticed that we never experience the same feeling in our meditations too!

For the rest of the story, it is for you to take action and write your own wonderful experience. Sometimes we keep searching for something outside when we already have everything within us which is crying for our attention. Spiritual journey is full of obstacles but put in your courage and valour, and you will realise one fine day, that 'Hey!This is it!'

By the way, if you are still wondering whether I understand myself more after the course, I am still as confused as before. But, as Balvinder happily told us,'I am confused too!' See...have I mentioned I just love this guy?

Here's to wishing everyone a wonderful journey!

Divine Is All Celebration

27/12/1995 Weggis, Switzerland

A poor man celebrates the new year once a year. A rich man celebrates each day. But the richest man celebrates every moment.

How rich are you? Do you celebrate once a year? Once a month? Every day? If you celebrate every moment you are the Lord of Creation.

Review the year while you celebrate. This is your homework. What did you do? What did you achieve? How useful were you this past year?

Sit for an hour and think about every week, one minute per week, and see the year's growth in less than an hour. With a flower, on New Year's Day, offer the whole year to the Divine.

BONUS READ :

During Satsang, Guruji opened a small, nicely-wrapped present - a tiny bottle of jasmine perfume. He twisted off the cap and sniffed the lovely fragrance. He poured a small amount on some paper and waved it in the air, wafting the scent to all corners of the hall. Everyone could then enjoy it.

Guruji explained that it is not enough simply to have the fragrance. We have to know how to spread it. Flowers have the fragrance, but it is the wind that comes and spreads it. In the same way, each one of us is wonderful within -- we are beautiful, caring, and loving. But we do not know how to spread the fragrance.

Satsang is that wind that spreads this fragrance to everyone.

(This week's knowledge sheet is specially dedicated to teacher Hwa Seng, the wind beneath my wings.)

Our Body is like a washing machine. Our Mind is like cloth. Love is like pure water. Knowledge is detergent. Each life-time is one wash cycle.

The mind comes into the body to get cleansed and pure. But if you put mud instead of detergent, your clothes become dirtier than before. Your will have to go on putting your clothes in the washing machine to get them cleaned. And the process repeats again and again.

Similarly, you will have many more births until you stop repeating the mistakes that you have made.

I sing because I am happy

Satsangs-where we sing because we are happy

DSN course at Art of Living Alor Setar Centre 27/5/2011-30/5/2011
A man was walking along the road to Damascus. He recalled his lost love and his soul grieved.

“Pity on those who know love,” he thought. “They will never be happy, with the fear of losing the one they love.”

At that moment he heard a nightingale sing.

- Why do you act like that? – the man asked the nightingale. – Don’t you see that my beloved, who loved your song so much, is no longer here by my side?

- I sing because I am happy – answered the nightingale.

- Haven’t you ever lost someone? – the man insisted.

- Many times – answered the nightingale. – But my love still remains all the same.

And the man went on his way feeling more hopeful.

All the problems that you face in life are because you attach overimportance to events. The events grow bigger while you remain smaller.

Say, for example, you are riding a motorbike on a busy street and in front of you another vehicle is emitting exhaust fumes. Your have three options:

1. You can complain, somehow bear with it, and still follow the vehicle.
2. You can slow down or wait for some time to allow the vehicle to move far away from you.
3. You can use your skill, overtake the vehicle, and forget about it.

As in the first case, most of you stick on the events and are miserable, like inhaling fumes throughout your journey.

In the second case, you don't get permanent relief, because another bigger vehicle might come in front of you. Running away from events is not the permanent solution.

Wise people use their skill to surmount the event. If the vehicle is in perfect condition, the skill is effective.

Conditioning the vehicle is sadhana-practice. And skill is the grace of the Guru.

The mistakes you have made in the past have made you humble; you need not make mistakes in the future to become humble.

The Bhagavad Gita online

Guruji encourages us to read the Gita, but stocks are limited.  The Bhagavad Gita Chinese version is even harder to get. Furthermore, $$ is also an issue...

Fear no more, great things are meant to be shared; especially for those who appreciates this ancient knowledge.  This Bhagavad Gita website has it in different languages. Yes! Even in Chinese!

The website attracted me in the first place because I get to follow the recordings and chant the shlokas! Happy reading!

Go to the Bhagavad-Gita website

SRI Sri was on the porch with a group of people.

He sent Kashi to get the sweets from inside the *kutir, but Kashi returned saying he could not find them. He went again and again, three times, and still he could not find them. Then Sri Sri himself went in. He came out with the sweets and gave them to everyone.

This is exactly what happens in life. Many want sweetness in life. Some are searching hard, but only one finds. And when that one finds, he gives to everyone.

Everyone is "blissed in", and some are "blissed out", too!

*a cottage or bungalow

What breaks intimacy?
  • Ego or taking a position
  • Desire
  • Taking intimacy for granted
  • Finding imperfection in oneself or others
  • Expectations
  • Insensitivity or over-sensitivity
  • Lack of vivek or vairagya (discretion or dispassion)
  • Judgments
  • Grumbling or lack of gratitude
How can you maintain intimacy?
Intimacy is dissolving into infinity, which brings you to the moment. You go beyond the events.

Look beyond the events, dissolve into infinity, and be in the moment.

This is the way to maintain intimacy.

If you are someone who reads this blog regularly, you will notice that this initially interesting and regularly updated site has been left outdated and redundant for some time!

ENOUGH! 够了!
And if you are someone who is still reading up to this stage, urging me to write on and telling me that I had done a good job (which makes me wonder)...you would feel that a part of me is back (the cheeky and passionate part!) Even though I meditate to search within myself, I would like to thank all of you who showed me that I belong to you!

Who Are You: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva - or Guru?

23/11/1995 Bangalore Ashram, India

There are three forces: Brahma Shakti, Vishnu Shakti, and Shiva Shakti. You may have one of these dominant.

Brahma Shakti is the force to create something new, Vishnu Shakti is the ability to maintain.

Shiva Shakti infuses new life or destroys the old and brings transformation.

Some of you have Brahma Shakti. Your may create something well, but you may not be able to maintain it. For example, you may make friends fast, but your friendships do not last long.

Some of you cannot create but you are good at maintaining-for example, those who have long-lasting friendships but who have difficulty making new friends. Here Vishnu Shakti is dominant.

Some of you have more Shiva Shakti. You can bring in new life or transformation, or you can destroy the whole setup.

With Guru Shakti, all these three shaktis have blossomed fully.  So identify which shakti you have more and aspire for Guru Shakti.

Guru makes a group,
but a group cannot make a Guru.

Date

Venue 地点: Alor Setar Art of Living Centre

It has been an extremely long time since I have updated our Art of Living Alor Setar centre virtual space.  (Sorry!)
I wish I could still be spending time typing and editing this favorite space of mine like I used to, but at the present moment (which is inevitable), I am very tied up at work, which left me little time to be a part of all the activities that the Alor Setar Art of Living Centre has arranged for us.

So what should we do? I could only say:
GET YOUR BUTT OFF THAT COUCH AND GO FOR GROUP PRACTICE REGULARLY TO GET THE LATEST UPDATES!

Boredom and Sadhana

15/11/1995 Bangalore Ashram, India

What is boredom?
Just a repetition without interest or love. That causes a monotonous state of mind and overshadows the Self.

Spiritual practices (sadhana) are again a repetition whose purpose is to destroy the boredom and reunite you with the Self. A practice itself creates boredom, but as you continue, you penetrate the boredom and destroy it once and for all. Whether the practice gives you joy or boredom, it must be continued. Only your practices, your sadhana, can overcome the mind.

The Self is love and love is always repetitive. Love letters are simply repetitive and yet there is no boredom there.

If you are so bored with yourself, how much more boring are you to others?

Root out the boredom in you through deep and continued meditation. Wake up and walk upwards.
