12/12/2010-18/12/2010

This week we allocated 10 minutes during group practice to sing Jai Gurudev, lead by our teacher.

We added this new feature to our group practice, right before starting our long kriya process, to sing a short and simple Bhajan. This is to introduce the experience of Satsang to many of you who have never participated in a Satsang.

Even after the short Satsang, the atmosphere became more lively, but at the same time it brought a sense of peace and calm, just perfect to start our weekly long Kriya.

14/11/2010-20/11/2010

We had our 2nd AOL Alor Setar committee meeting on 17/11/2010 at 10.00am. From the beginning when Art of Living first established our centre in Alor Setar, some of us was against setting up a committee (alright, that was me!) However, when more and more people started to get involved in this organisation, the time came when setting up a committee becomes inevitable. So then, we started to have some sort of a system amidst the chaos!

Now we have 7 sub-committees with different duties. Anyone who has an interest to volunteer can contact our seva warrior-in-charge and become a seva!

I will post the necessary contacts and do a brief feature on each of our Seva warrior as soon as I possibly can!

Our first ever express Part I course is held over the weekend  on 18/11/2010 - 20/11/2010.

7/11/2010-13/11/2010

This week our Sri Sri Yoga 6-day course comes to an end.  We are so fortunate that amidst the flood in Alor Setar, the Sri Sri Yoga course could proceed smoothly, with our centre and participants unaffected by the calamity.

Mama Lai's birthday celebration on 13/11/2010 had an Indian theme, and of course, plus very good food!

31/10/2010-06/11/2010

Beginning from Tuesday night (02/11/2010) the water levels of our rivers started rising and overflowing, causing serious floods to the northern part of Kedah, as well as Perlis.

Quite a few of our members from our Art of Living Centre were affected by the flood.  The flood had mostly subsided at this time and for those whose homes were flooded are probably washing and cleaning away the dirt.  Some were lucky enough to be only stranded for a few days as the water kept rising outside their homes, praying hard that the water remained outside the gates.  For some living at the Southern part of the district, were thankfully not affected at all.

Disaster such as flood happens when the nature lose its balance. The same applies to us humans, when we lose our balance between our intellect and emotions, our life lose its balance as well.

 In Guruji's words,

"When water flows between two banks, we call it river. But if water is scattered all over the place, then that is flood. In life, along with intellect, feelings are also to be nourished. To maintain a balance between intellect and emotions is wisdom."

10/10/2010-16/10/2010

As we are celebrating our festival of Nine Emperor Gods, celebration of Navaratri in Bangalore, Ashram, is going on in full force, both Festivals fall on the same dates, i.e. 8/10/2010-16/10/2010.  Devotees celebrate these two festivals for nine consecutive nights and usually both festivals happen at the same time each year.

Undeniably, our ancestors are much more smarter and spiritually fulfilled than their generation today.  Imagine a world before globalisation and the era of the internet, where there are no TV and radios, (Yes! We are talking about that long ago) our great forefathers from continents so far apart, after going into deep contemplation during meditation, decided simultaneously that once in every year, there are nine special nights which deserve celebration.

As celebration in our modern society goes, the most realistic way of celebrating something is to declare it as a public holiday so that we can stay home, instead of going to work. But celebration of Navaratri goes deeper that that.  We have the grace and blessing to have Guruji, who shares the same wave length with our ancestors and is willing to share the ancient sacred knowledge with the world.

According to Guruji, Navaratri is a celebration of our spirit or prana (life force). 'The nine days of Navratri are also an opportunity to rejoice in the three primordial qualities that make up the universe. Though our life is governed by the three gunas, we seldom recognize and reflect on them. The first three days of Navratri are attributed to tamo guna, the next three days to rajo guna and the last three days to sattva guna. Our consciousness sails through the tamo and rajo gunas and blossoms in the sattva guna of the last three days. Whenever sattva dominates in life, victory follows. The essence of this knowledge is honored by celebrating the tenth day as Vijaydashmi.'
(For those who thirst for Guruji's weekly knowledge, log on to Wisdom from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.)

In modern terms, Navaratri is a celebration of our Self, ancient wisdom, a time to let go (even just for a short while) our desires, feverishness and reflect on our inner Self.  In short, it is a journey to the center of the Self.

We celebrate the last day of Navaratri with a group of 8 people, singing sometimes out-of-tune bhajans, playing mostly out of beat instruments, and listening to Guruji's discourse on Bhakti Sutra, about love and pain. Compared to the thousands of devotees that throng the Ashram at Bangalore, ours seemed like a very small and private affair.  Nevertheless, the love, enthusiasm and wisdom flows from the same infinite consciousness.

Don't forget, most fortunate is the one who celebrates life everyday!!!

03/10/2010-09/10/2010

The past week, teacher Hwa Seng managed to conduct our weekly group practice on Sunday and Monday, before heading off to the Navaratri Celebration at the Ashram in Bangalore, India.  Navaratri is celebrated by the thousands at the Ashram each year and it has a very special meaning especially to those on the spiritual path.

Vishalakshi Mantap (Bangalore, India)-also warmly called the birthday cake!
This week, we would like to feature a group of selfless volunteers-who took up the commitment to clean up our centre every Saturday, come rain or shine.  They work behind the scenes, away from the spotlight, and never complain about the workload.  Cleaning the centre together amidst the full blast of bhajans on the speakers is another merry weekly affair! Anyone who feels like joining in the fun is welcome to join us every Saturday at 9.00am - 11.00am.

Happy Moon Cake Festival, Folks! We celebrated our Moon Cake festival amidst the chaos and noise at the Dewan Perhimpunan Orang Cina with a booth to promote our latest Public Health Talk and our Basic Course to be held this week.  The public, with the aim of going to the festival for some good food and to finish off the coupons that they were somehow 'obliged' to buy, one could not help but wonder whether setting up a booth at such a Festival is effective. But it sure is a great way to enjoy the full moon!

15/08/2010 - 21/08/2010

15/08/2010 - 19/08/2010, 44 members from our Alor Setar Art of Living Centre were enjoying ourselves in the Advanced Course in the presence of Guruji at the Bayview Resort, Batu Feringghi.  Our centre photographers Shin Wei and Ju Gee shared loads of wonderful photos at the Advanced Meditation Course in Facebook.

The next day right after the course, on 20/08/2010 (Fri) 10.30am, our volunteers at the Alor Setar centre held free public talk about breathing and health.

30/05/2010-05/06/2010

It has now come to the end of the week, when I always look forward to jot down some interesting things that happened throughout the week in this column under our Alor Setar AOL weekly news flash (inspiration just flows after Satsang at the end of the week)!

This week, Lay Choon is MIA (having fun somewhere at the other end of the globe), our teacher, Hwa Seng has conducted a Basic Course in a factory in Penang, Carmen has gone off to KL...and I am now at our weekly merry Satsang affair (I promised my Satsang band member I would be there in consciousness anyway!)  Right here, this moment, I am sharing, and if you can't feel my presence, COME FOR GROUP PRACTICE OFTEN AND DO MORE MEDITATION, DUDE!
Since most of the VIPs are absent, we were left to fend for ourselves.  Teacher Charon came from SP on Sunday for our group practice, and May took over the reigns on Monday.  I am sure everyone must have enjoyed the Yoga on Tuesday and Wednesday after May's return from the Sri Sri Yoga TTC!

Guruji was under attack this week! But no worries, he is fine! Thank you, Guan Seng for sharing the news.

ZY signing off from Singapore Changi Airport, on transit to Munich.

21/05/2010-28/05/2010 Change is inevitable

While May and I are still having lessons and studying for 'exams', during group practice here plans were hatched to come and meet us at the airport. It was such a surprise! Really appreciate the beautiful flowers for us, Shin Wei. We also appreciate Ju Gee and Liu Peng for coming to meet us upon our return. Still so unbelievable I am a Sri Sri Yoga teacher-in-training :P

Lay Choon left for vacation on the night we came back from Taiwan. We never had the chance to meet up before then.

We have found a new location for our new centre. If everything goes as plan, soon we shall have a more spacious centre to accommodate us. We are moving very soon!

Tonight's Satsang was exceptionally great! Other than the usual Bhajans, we also sang lots of Chinese folk songs. Some time ago, if too many Chinese folk songs were sang during Satsangs, I felt a sense of irritation as I felt that it was so difficult to keep up with the verses and the sense of togetherness was lost. But tonight, irregardless of whether I know the songs, I sang with all my heart, accepting and going with the flow of the situation, instead of letting the situation influence my emotions. Our 10-member satsang team today was one that I appreciate and enjoy most at that perfect moment. Bravo, my dear friends!

Last 2 weeks was spent at the SSY TTC in Taiwan, next week I shall be leaving for Germany. I leave my responsibilities to Carmen. She knows this blog is my baby, and I really appreciate her constant updates and research to add the spice that has been long awaited in this space! I still need to trouble you for the days to come!

Change is inevitable.  Only truth remains unchanged.

02/05/2010-08/05/2010

The highlight of our event this week was our multiple celebration on Saturday 08/05/2010 (Guruji's Birthday, Mother's Day, and farewell party).

The evening started with Guru Pooja.  Thereafter, there were sooooo many variety of good food brought by everybody, the evening naturally carried on with non-stop eating.

Satsang was in chaos, with every instrument available being held by small kids and the event was a cacophony of 'ching, chang, and cheang!!' Even my guitar was unusually out of sync, and my singing sounded more or less like  a croaking frog...But nevertheless, the mood and events that unfolded were just like the 'multiple celebration' theme by being 'multiple' with some Bhajans, Guruji's knowledge, meditation, singing of Birthday songs and of course, how can we miss out on the dance!
Just when I thought the evening was going to end with 'Jai Jai Radha Ramana Hari Bol', it took an interesting turn of events when some of us started a human train, one after another started joining and suddenly, we began dancing to a mix of Taiwan folk song and Jai Jai Radha Ramana Hari Bol until we were red in the face and intoxicated.

The evening ended with everyone closing our eyes to make a wish, with Teacher's blessings. I was so elated with the dancing and singing (and lost my voice in the process) that when I closed my eyes, there was just this feeling of perfection, and it dawned on me that this evening, the true purpose of Satsang was achieved-to be in touch with the inner being.

25/04/2010-01/05/2010 (A Weekend Retreat for Volunteers

The beginning of the week crawled by so slowly because there was something exciting to look forward to - and that is our trip to Green Wish Vege Garden at Kampung Sg. Genting , Perak on 30/04/2010 - 01/05/2010.  Our previous posts had been a little wordy so I took the trouble to remember taking some snapshots to share.

Our first stop - Gua Kandu 我们的第一站-Kandu山洞
Yes.  That's right! One of the unforgettable moments at Gua Kandu was when every torchlight were switched off and everyone observed a 1-minute silence to have a feel of the inside of the cave.  Ever had the feeling of being literally consumed by darkness?

Then suddenly, the cave cracked, the sun shone from above, and a smiling Angel descended.

Our next stop - right outside Gua Kandu...
Just hanging around...while waiting for tow-truck to come and towaway one of our cars that refused to start.

After a very very late lunch, we took our shower right here...at Kinjang waterfall.

Then, we could not escape home kriya because coincidentally, our teacher joined us for the trip...
Next up, a visit to the Kampung orang asli.
The odd one out...playing football with the boys

The next morning...

After yoga, short Kriya, and breakfast, Kenny brought us around his farm for a tour. Thereafter, we visited a Christian Settler's Kicap factory, and bought some health food at their store. Guan Seng treated us for a round of durian ice lollies!

Kenny (right) packing his delicious papayas from his organic farm for us.  Standing opposite Kenny is Wooi Se, our dear organiser for this trip.
Thank you Uncle Robert, who is a member of the Malaysian Karst Society, our Captain for our adventure in Gua Kandu, and to educate us about Limestone caves and the dangers they face in the wake of human ignorance and greediness.

Of course, there wouldn't be a trip if it weren't for Kenny and Lee May, our warm hosts at the farm who had shared so many useful knowledge not only about organic farming, but so much more...

The world is definitely still a good place because these individuals are shining brightly for us.

Last but not least, our group photo... 。。
