Happy Father's Day to the Male Species Past, Present and Future

ZY's note: In celebration of Father's Day this year, this is a story of a great man and the great (and not so great) times we had together.

‘Kung kung, you can make the best cup of Milo in the world,’ I cooed to my grandfather. He always smiled with pride as he heard this. I knew I made him happy, because whenever he knew I was coming, there would be a cup of hot Milo waiting for me when I arrived at the house.

I was not saying it to please my grandfather though, because it really was nice. He knew I was sincere because I usually ate 10 whole pieces of the Jacob’s biscuits to go with the Milo. The expression on my face showed how much I enjoyed the cup of Milo specially made for me by my grandfather.

There were also two of my favourite dishes which I would always remember. One was the soy sauce chicken with the sauce just dark and thick creamy enough and the other was the long beans fried rice. I loved to stand beside him and looked up at him stirring the food on the stove, even though I was too short to see what was happening on the stove, I could tell from the delicious smell wafting from the pan.

My grandfather was a short and stout man, who spent most of his time tending to his plants, fish, birds, or whatever animals that happened to come by for a visit. Once there was a green frog that took to the plank on the pool for his Japanese coy, and took temporary residence there. He always came back to hang out even after venturing out for some adventure or hunt for food. He was in a shade of bright green with red eyes. I loved to creep out slowly into the backyard to take a peep at him, hoping that he would find a partner and bring her home some day.

Just like the animals, I loved to hang out at my grandfather’s house those days. It was like National Geographic right at the backyard of the house.

‘When I was still working at the shop during the first few years after I came down from China, there was a bird,’ he told me.

‘It would wait for me on the roof at the back of the shop and when I came out from the shop, the bird would fly down and perch on my shoulder to greet me. But it would not go near any of the other shop assistants. It would only answer to me. It totally ignored the others at the shop,’ he said proudly.

My grandfather was born in China. He had a twin brother. According to my grandmother, when my great-grandmother was giving birth, she never knew that she was having twins. When she delivered my grandfather, she felt that there was still something inside her belly, and then out came my grandfather’s twin brother after a few minutes.

‘Is he your identical twin brother? What happened to him? Is he still in China?’ I bombarded my grandfather.

‘I don’t know,’ he replied. ‘He died of an illness when he was 6 years old.’

My grandfather had magical hands. The animals loved him, so do the plants. Rows of bonsai trees were nurtured by him personally into beautiful shapes and sizes. Even the pots were personally hand-made from scratch. I had never seen him taken any pottery lessons of learned under any master, he just produced each and every one of them like magic. There were a couple of square pots embedded with rows and rows of 1 cent coins. Talk about creativity and originality. At that time, I never knew how to describe the feeling when I was admiring the pots and the well-tended plants on his front lawn, but now I know. I was bursting with pride.

After my grandmother passed away, he had no choice but to come and stay with us.  He did so quite reluctantly, and I didn’t blame him. How could any other place be better than his own home where he could do anything just as he liked?

But we had no choice either, as he kept seeing more and more animals.

‘Hey, look!’ he called to me with an excited glint in his eyes. ‘There is a tortoise under the trolley,’ he pointed to the well polished granite floor in our dining room.

‘No,’ I said, ‘There is nothing there.’

‘Yes,’ he said with conviction. ‘Can’t you see it? There is another one crawling out, and another one!’ he looked quizzically at me as I did not say anything. I could see question marks in his eyes.

It was heart wrenching to see my grandfather deteriorating each day, affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

I would always remember the image of my grandfather standing outside the bathroom in his white underwear while waiting for my mom to give him instructions to go into the bath, to wash his head, to rub his body with soap as he lost his ability to take a clean bath independently.

There were also a couple of nights when he woke the whole family up saying that he was going to go home, and proceeded to venture out at 3 a.m. in the morning. After walking up and down the street with my father by his side, he finally came back ‘home’ satisfied.

My mother took an early retirement to take care of my grandfather. But he passed away just 6 months after that. He was in his eighties.

Meditation-It's a Monkey Business

People meditate for lots of reasons, one of the main reason is to have a peace of mind. When we have lots of thoughts during meditation, we say 'oh, today I did not have a good meditation'. But in meditation, sometimes we enjoy the experience, sometimes we don't enjoy the experience (a great resemblance to life, huh!). But somehow or other, as long as we meditate, we definitely get results (Guruji said that).

To illustrate the nature of our mind, Guruji told a Monkey story.

There was a farmer who went to a Saint and said 'Give me something, so that my life becomes wonderful, give me some mantra so that I must do the meditation and good things will start happening.'

The Saint said 'Ok' and gave him a mantra and told him to chant it. The farmer was very happy and he was running down the stairs going back with his mantra. The Saint said 'Oh just a minute, I forgot to tell you something. Whenever you want to think of the mantra or when you sit for meditation, take care that the monkey doesn't come into your mind. You don't think of monkey. If you think about the monkey then the mantra would become useless, impotent. It won't be of use to you.'

The farmer said ,'Oh this is so easy. I have never thought about monkey all my life, there is no reason that I should think about it now. Mind is just a field, monkeys don't come there.  It is no botheration at all.'

So, he went home and sat for meditation. The first thing that comes to his mind was:
'Say Cheese!'
He thought 'Oh, this is daytime. Maybe somewhere there is monkey vibrations around or maybe the monkeys wanted him to remember them. But in night time the monkeys will be asleep!'

So he tried to meditate during the night. But as soon as he sat to meditate the first thing that comes to his mind was:

Now not only in meditation in all other times even while standing, sitting, working, eating, he thought of monkeys. He even had nightmares about:
You're right! Monkeys!
In three days, he was so bothered about monkeys that on the fourth day he went back to the Saint and pleaded to him,'Please take away your mantra and your monkeys too! I don't want them. Relieve me of this monkey business. I have gone crazy. I can't do anything!'
So we have to understand the nature of our minds. Instead of being a slave to our minds, become the Master of our own minds.  Thus, our practices, sadhanas and meditation really help us to understand our monkey within us. Let us strive to tame the wild monkey within us!
Talking about monkeys, there was once I went to sit for meditation alone at the Sumeru Mantap at Bengalore Ashram.
I never had any thoughts about monkeys during meditation. I almost wished I had, because when I slowly opened my eyes, I was looking into the eyes of a monkey sitting opposite me. He confidently walked a few steps across towards me, headed to my bag, and calmly took the banana from the side pocket of my backpack.

'Hey!' I yelled at him. He gave a start and ran across the floor and climbed the steps. He stopped when he saw that I did not go after him. He unpeeled the banana and ate his prized possession right in front of me.

Try something new for 30 days

Matt Cutts: Try something new for 30 days

Thanks to my writer friend Fareeda, here's a video which she shared with our group and which I found inspiring.

Quite a lot of friends, when we talk about Yoga, thought that it is a very difficult thing. Some of them told me their bodies are very stiff, and therefore feel stupid when they could not bend into certain postures.

Don't worry, you are not alone!

But be rest assured that Yoga is definitely not about bending into ridiculously impossible postures, but a great way to learn more about our body and relax our mind. Do yourself a favour, do not compare yourself with others too! Instead, listen to what your body tells you. That is the first step to awareness.

Maybe, if you are willing to try something new, give yoga some thought. I knew I did, during one point of my life!

New Year Resolution

Attention: Our beloved and much respected Yoga Teacher of teachers, Krishan Verma, has started his own Yoga blog at My Yoga Space~Krishan Verma. I have added the link to the useful links tab on the right side of this blog for future reference.

My New Year Resolution?

Krishanji's post about letting go was spot on about my recent experience so I am tempted to quote him here:

'Letting go of the past doesn’t mean forgetting the past. It is letting go of the questioning and blaming which gives rise to the emotions of anger and regret in us. It is not the memory of the past that troubles us, but the emotions and feelings associated with the past that hurt us. Dropping the questioning and blaming drops the hurtful emotions. The skill lies in becoming aware of the questions and emotions arising in us but not giving much importance to them. We do this for our own sake, for our own well being. The anger and regrets in us are detrimental to the well being of our own bodies and mind.'

Moving away from home permanently is a transition bigger than I thought.

Letting go of everything in Alor Setar Art of Living Centre is not easy: away from Saturday night satsangs, Sunday group practice, Tuesday yoga session, hanging around during Yoga courses, hanging around during Basic courses and everything surrounding it. Everytime when my mind brought it up, first it will be happy thinking of the good memories, then it became doubtful and regretful for spoiling old relationships and not maintaining new ones, then it became angry for not putting enough effort in doing seva,  whoooooosh! Who says letting go and moving forward comes easy?

It is no wonder I got sick and lost weight these past few months. This emotional roller coaster has taken its toll on me mentally as well as physically. Thank goodness I am aware of this now! I am personally giving myself a star for dealing with it the Yogic way!

Bye-bye 2011

Love,
ZY

My Favourite Balvinder Story

Once upon a time, some devotees built an Ashram in a faraway land and requested their Guru to send one teacher from His Ashram to take charge of their ashram over there.  The distance between the two Ashrams are very far and it would take days of walking to arrive at the Ashram (Walking and meditation was the only mode of transportation back then ;)

The Guru promised the Devotees that he would send a teacher to their Ashram. The Guru sent 10 disciples for this mission. Everyone in the Ashram was shocked. 'How come our Guru sent 10 disciples when the people from the Ashram only asked for one?' they thought, unable to understand their Guru's actions.

However, nobody argued and the 10 disciples begin their journey to the faraway Ashram.

After a few days, they arrived at a city. There they met a rich Businessman. The Businessman said ,'I run a big business and I own an empire. But alas! I have no son! I would like to look for a son-in-law to take over this empire of mine!'

'Oh, but our Guru gave us a mission. We could not help you,' the disciples replied.

'Ah,' said the rich Businessman. 'But imagine the riches and the life you will lead if you are willing to help me. Furthermore, if one of you stayed back, you still have 9 of you to go!' and the Businessman introduced his beautiful daughter to them.

One of the disciples were captivated by the beauty of the businessman's daughter. So he decided to marry her and stayed back to assist the businessman to run his business, while the other 9 disciples continued on their journey.

After a few days, they came to another kingdom. They were met by the King himself, as the King is a very religious person and respect the Guru's followers very much.  After the feast, the King said to the disciples,'My Head Priest had passed away recently and I can't find any other suitable candidate to fill his position. It would be a great opportunity if one of you could stay to fill this position.'

'But we are on our way to the Ashram!' they replied.

'Ah! But you see,' replied the king,'There are many benefits in becoming the Head Priest. You would be the most respected person in the Kingdom after me. You would be the second most powerful man in this Kingdom. You would have all the funds you need for your religious endeavours!'

One of the disciples were tempted by the King's offer. 'Anyway, there are still the other disciples who can go to the Ashram,' he thought. So he stayed back to become the Head Priest to assist the King and the rest of the disciples continued on their journey.

One day, they came to a village slum.  The villagers were divided into 2 opposition parties which were always fighting. 'Please help us restore peace in this village!' the villagers pleaded with the disciples.  So they organised yoga and breathing courses and transformed the village from a slum to a peaceful state. When they were prepared to leave, the villagers pleaded to the disciples,

"Please stay with us to maintain the peace that you have brought to this village! What could we do without you? We might go back to the old days and continue to fight and live in a state of unrest."

So after discussing among themselves, 2 of the disciples decided to stay back in the village and continue with organising the village projects.

The rest of the 6 disciples continue with their journey.

 *  *  *  *  *
So it happened that along the way, the other 4 disciples also left the group due to various reasons.

Now only 2 disciples were left to continue with the journey.

One day, they passed by a place where an organiser came to welcome them anxiously.  "I am in a difficult position. I was organising a mega Yoga course and suddenly the teacher did not come. Can you help me?"

So the last 2 disciples stayed back for a few days to help teach the Yoga course. After the course, the organiser and the teachers were discussing about the course and one of the teacher got into an argument about the Guru's knowledge. So the teacher told the other disciple," You go ahead to the Ashram, I need to stay back to discuss about this point of knowledge before I could continue the journey. I cannot bear to see the Guru's knowledge being twisted and misunderstood!"

The last disciple continued the journey alone and finally reached the Ashram.  Everyone was amazed that the Guru sent 10 disciples but alas, only one reached the destination!

(I try to retell my favourite story of Balvinderji as accurate as possible, but details might differ)

I first heard this story 2 years ago at the Bengalore Ashram as told by Balvinderji. I heard this story again when I was blessed enough to meet him again 2 months ago. The moral of the story is that the journey towards enlightenment is full of obstacles. Those obstacles include our desires and attachment towards riches, power, career, relationships, setting other people right and so on and so forth. At first I was very skeptical and misunderstood the moral of this story. But 2 years down the road, this story became one of my pillars of strength when I was feeling very lonely walking on this path; when I was filled with self doubt, remorse and regret; and especially when I lost every ounce of belongingness with the organisation that I have grown so attached to. Listening to Balvinderji the second time round helped me regain my confidence on this path, to accept the changes around me gracefully, and to look ahead courageously. If you ever felt so much pain, know that you have been given more ability to love.

Sangh Gachadhwam and happy journey!

Love,
ZY

ZY's sixth Advance Course sharing-only for those who dare...

...read on

Introducing Balvinder Chandiok, my most favourite advance course teacher, who guided me, from being sadly confused, to staying happily confused.
This inspirational quote is stolen from Balvinder Chandiok's blog
Before I even met him, Balvinder already knew my problem. I am definitely not alone. Who cares if nobody understands me? The problem is, I don't know what's my problem!

We live in the best times, and we grow up KNOWING that we are smart; we believe in our own self; we KNOW that if we could master our own mind; we could concur the whole world; we KNOW what is good  for us and what is not...now, that is our main and biggest problem! We KNOW too much! OK, maybe it is just me: I KNOW too much!

My brain is literally swimming with all these virtues such as accepting people as they are, letting go of the past and living in the present moment, don't see intention behind other's mistakes, opposite values are complementary... I already KNOW this, any idiot who dare come and repeat these words to me will be in deep trouble!  It came to a point that  I felt so overwhelmed by all these knowledge points that I just felt like throwing up and forgetting about all these superficial words. But how?

I don't know! I'm stuck.

So, I signed up for an advance course.

Finally, I found someone that explains course points in such a subtle way that my heart literally blossom with just a few simple words, and of course, followed by a few blank out sessions (meditation, what else?) And thank god he has so much depth in him that he explains course points in his own cool and humorous way, instead of repeating after Guruji (what a breath of fresh air!)

Contentment
Most people would gush to me, you are so lucky, you have a flexible job (no stress at all), you have the time and money to do what you want... (They fall short of literally shouting at my face: BE CONTENT!) Yeah,  yeah, you think I don't KNOW that?

Now here's what I learn about contentment from Balvinder:
Contentment is looking at your own wife instead of your neighbour's wife.
(If you are not already laughing, you must go to his advance course and listen to him speak in person. He got me rolling with this one!)

Accepting people as they are
He says,'The key to accept people as they are, is to accept yourself!'
Oh my God! Such depth!
(If you haven't accept people as they are as yet, sign up for his advance course and listen to him speak in person.)

At the end of his course I felt 'Yes!This is just the beginning'  instead of the usual 'Enough! This is the end of it!' feeling from all my previous advance courses. (Though you might notice that my ego will prevent me from admitting that) Of course, just like no fingerprint is the same, there is no same experience in our spiritual journey. You must have noticed that we never experience the same feeling in our meditations too!

For the rest of the story, it is for you to take action and write your own wonderful experience. Sometimes we keep searching for something outside when we already have everything within us which is crying for our attention. Spiritual journey is full of obstacles but put in your courage and valour, and you will realise one fine day, that 'Hey!This is it!'

By the way, if you are still wondering whether I understand myself more after the course, I am still as confused as before. But, as Balvinder happily told us,'I am confused too!' See...have I mentioned I just love this guy?

Here's to wishing everyone a wonderful journey!

I sing because I am happy

Satsangs-where we sing because we are happy

DSN course at Art of Living Alor Setar Centre 27/5/2011-30/5/2011
A man was walking along the road to Damascus. He recalled his lost love and his soul grieved.

“Pity on those who know love,” he thought. “They will never be happy, with the fear of losing the one they love.”

At that moment he heard a nightingale sing.

- Why do you act like that? – the man asked the nightingale. – Don’t you see that my beloved, who loved your song so much, is no longer here by my side?

- I sing because I am happy – answered the nightingale.

- Haven’t you ever lost someone? – the man insisted.

- Many times – answered the nightingale. – But my love still remains all the same.

And the man went on his way feeling more hopeful.

The Bhagavad Gita online 薄伽梵歌网页

Guruji encourages us to read the Gita, but stocks are limited.  The Bhagavad Gita Chinese version is even harder to get. Furthermore, $$ is also an issue...

Fear no more, great things are meant to be shared; especially for those who appreciates this ancient knowledge.  This Bhagavad Gita website has it in different languages. Yes! Even in Chinese!

The website attracted me in the first place because I get to follow the recordings and chant the shlokas! Happy reading!

Go to the Bhagavad-Gita website

Share with us! 让我们一起分享!

This blog is started upon Guruji's order. Haha!....actually it was because I found that it was getting difficult for me to keep up with so many things happening and upcoming at our Art of Living Centre in Alor Setar.  So I keep a tab of it here! It serves as our virtual Art of Living Alor Setar notice board.  My vision is to keep track of all the upcoming centre activities with just a click!
I added the weekly Newsflash to keep a record of the events happening as well.  So this Blog also serves as our Art of Living Alor Setar record book.
If you read this blog, and you would like to contribute once in a while to make it more interesting, to share your heartfelt experiences and to add some of your own personal touches, please email your contributions to hoezhengyi@yahoo.com.  Any topic which is Art of Living related in any language is welcome! (suggestions: your experience for attending any AOL courses, your application of the knowledge, our celebrations during special occasions, and even photos etc.)

Also feel free to share anything, good or bad, by giving comments in this blog.  (Just click on the comment link.)

As Guruji says,

'When the whole world celebrates, all of nature is celebrating its diversity.'

It's time to add some spice to our blog and let it blossom!
